“On The Floor” by Perfume Genius
Perfume Genius, a.k.a. Mike Hadreas, has released his newest album Set My Heart on Fire Immediately via Matador Records. Its latest single, “On the Floor”, finds the indie pop artist wrestling with the overly intoxicating effects of a crush. Directed by Hadreas himself, the song’s video features Hadreas topless, smoking a cigar. “I pace, I run my mouth/I pray and wait,” he sings over a synth-pop beat. “I cross out his name on the page.” Three and a half minutes into the clip, Hadreas splits into two and dances with himself.
“A crush can really live on its own, separate from you and the person you are pining for,” Hadreas said of the song in a statement. “The fantasy feels like its own world, obsession can turn the person you are longing for into a monument that has less and less to do with them and more to do with the idea of love itself and what it can do, what it can soothe or quiet or light on fire.”
“I wanted to show that maddening, solitary part of desire,” Hadreas added, “but keep the core which is a real warmth and belief that you have something crucial to share with each other.” Below, check out “On the Floor” via an official video self-directed by Perfume Genius:
“On The Floor”
I'm trying
But still I close my eyes
The dreaming
Bringing his face to mine
Lock the door
The constant buzzing
All through the night
The fight it
Rips me all up inside
On the floor
I pace, I run my mouth
I pray and wait
I cross out his name on the page
(How long 'til) this washes away?
(How long 'til) my body is safe?
(How long 'til) I walk in the light?
(How long 'til) this heart isn't mine?
The rise and fall
Of his chest on me
I'm trying
But still it's all I see
The violent
Current of energy
I hide it
Away and underneath
Lock the door
I shake, I promise everyday
To change
I cross out his name on the page
(How long 'til) this washes away?
(How long 'til) my body is safe?
(How long 'til) I walk in the light?
(How long 'til) this heart isn't mine?
Take this wildness away
I'm trying
But still I close my eyes
The dreaming
Bringing his face to mine
Out the door
I pace, I run my mouth
I pray to change
I cross out his name on the page
(How long 'til) this washes away?
(How long 'til) my body is safe?
(How long 'til) this heart isn't mine?
I just want him in my arms
I just want him in my arms
