For the second time in less than a week, another American was found dead inside of a Dominican Republic Hotel.

Shortly after arriving on the Caribbean island on May 25, Miranda Schaup-Werner collapsed and died in her hotel room at Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana, Fox News reports.

As we previously reported, a couple identified as Edward Nathaniel Holmes and Cynthia Day was also found dead in their room. They had just arrived at the resort on the day of Miranda’s death.

The U.S. State Department confirmed the news to Fox News, saying: “We can confirm the death of a U.S. citizen in the Dominican Republic.   We offer our sincerest condolences to the family for their loss.  We are in close contact with local authorities regarding their investigation into the cause of death.  We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance.”

“The U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater responsibility than the protection of U.S. citizens overseas.  Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”

The hotel also released a statement,

“Mrs. Schaup Werner, who was a guest of Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville, was found unresponsive in her room on May 25. Following established protocols, the hotel doctor responded immediately and coordinated her transfer to Hospiten Santo Domingo. Unfortunately, Mrs. Schaup passed away in the room prior.”

“In the days that followed, we provided our complete support to Mr. Werner in collaboration with local authorities and the U.S. Embassy. We are deeply saddened by this situation and express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

The death for both parties was ruled as respiratory failure and pulmonary edema, which is often caused by too much fluid in the lungs. The families are looking to conduct further autopsies back in the U.S.
