All new cars in the U.S. are now required to have… backup cameras! (Now there should be no excuses why people can’t parallel park! )
According to USA Today, the regulation went into effect Wednesday. It now requires all new cars to have rearview cameras and video displays in their new models.
“The regulation is a monumental advancement of safety for children, pedestrians, bicyclists and other vulnerable road users,” Cathy Chase, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said in a statement.
“It’s important to remember that rearview video systems are not a replacement for mirrors or turning around to look; rather, they’re an added safety tool for revealing hidden dangers,” DOT said.
Safety advocates say the regulation will help prevent accidents. Backover crashes kill about 200 people a year and injure more than 12,000.
