Ohio Catholic Priest Commits Suicide In Chicago Among Misconduct Investigation

James Csaszar jumped off the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago after facing pressure following misconduct allegations.

The New Albany, Ohio-based Catholic priest was the face of the Church of the Resurrection. The Chicago Tribune described Csaszar as a “well-liked” community figure. Despite Resurrection’s congregation admiration, nothing could undo the shame he had to come to terms with after being put on administrative leave by The Diocese. This was brought about due to “questionable text and telephone communications with a minor,” as well as “potential misuse of church funds” during his work at St. Rose of Lima Parish.

Cook County’s medical examiner officially announced the day after the incident that it was, indeed, a suicide. Scandal and taking his own life did not halt community support of Father Csaszar.

Rev. Frederick F. Campbell, Bishop of Columbus, made a statement saying: “We are reminded throughout sacred scripture that God our Father is loving, merciful, compassionate and forgiving. We also know that in his years of priestly ministry Fr. Csaszar did many good things for the people that he served in his parish assignments. And so we ask that everyone pray for Father Csaszar, his family, friends, and parishioners during this most difficult time.”

Regardless, Ohio law enforcement made it clear the misconduct investigation will continue.
