Hi- general question regarding top, mid and bottom notes

I went to the movies and a week ago and someone in a seat in front of me had wore the best perfume ever. I asked him what perfume he was wearing and he said Tom Ford Black orchid. I went to the nearest shop and asked for a sample but it didn't smell quite the same. Why is that?

If I understand correctly from reading online, what we smell after about 1-2 hours is the mid and base notes, not the top notes. So is it safe to assume that what I like about his perfume was a combination of the following:

Heart Notes

Orchid, Spicy notes, Fruity notes, Lotus

Base notes

Vetiver, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Incense, Amber, Chocolate, Vanille

My questions really is, why did it smell so great on him and not in the store sample? What I liked was that spicy vanilla not the first impression of the fruity notes.

Anyone can help me to find which of those notes I was mostly attracted to?
