It Defies Common Sense

A couple of years or so back, I purchased a Vintage 2 oz Guerlain Jicky Extrait in a splash Bottle. The day the package arrived, I immediately knew something was wrong as I could smell the fragrance quite strongly before I ever opened the shipping box. Once opened, I was chagrined to find that the seller had emptied the bottle's contents into a Tupperware container and never even bothered to be sure that the container was tightly sealed. Thus, the perfume spilt out all over the box and the plastic wrapping inside. The odour was so strong that it literally made me feel ill. I had to move the box and its contents to the garage until I could contact the seller for a return label. Even after I removed it the garage, my entire house smelt like Jicky extrait for several days. It was such a waste of a vintage Guerlain that it almost made me cry, and I wondered, why on earth would someone do something like this?

Flash forward to today. I was perusing vintage fragrances on etsy and came across a beautiful, nearly full 100ml bottle of a fairly rare Lavin---Scandal 85º. I was appalled to read in the description that the seller emptied out the entire contents into a measuring cup to estimate how much fragrance the bottle contained, as neither the bottle nor the box is apparently marked, and then she used a funnel to put the fragrance back into the bottle. Again, I almost cried.

Perhaps it is just I, but it seems to defy common sense to do such a thing. Why not simply measure the bottle's height and width, weigh it, and compare it to other perfume bottles that are clearly marked as to oz/ml and then list an estimated amount of contents if one still feels unsure? More and more I understand why SEALED bottles are so prised.
