Evacuating with your perfumes - the story of Jay Telegdi

I happened to be watching a show on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) last night called Still Standing where the host visits a small Canadian Town that is struggling and interviews the locals to discover the unique and special things about the town and its people. Fort McMurray, Alberta, is not a small town, but they were devastated by an enormous fire in May 2013, and the host wanted to visit there to talk about the fire and its impact on the town.

One part particularly caught my attention: there were two men, Jay Telegdi and Peter Fortna, who had to evacuate in a hurry and they decided to take their cat and Jay's collection of 200 rare vintage colognes. He's one of us!! :-) They told a hilarious story of how they attempted to get a métis trapper to keep the colognes for them, then finally had to abandon them when the rescue helicopter came and the pilot refused to let them get in with a box of flammable liquids. His story must have been told on the news or social media, because he showed baggies full of samples people had sent him after hearing of his loss. Perfume people are the best! He said he is rebuilding his collection.

Jay, if you are here on Basenotes, nice to see you and hear your story! Here is the link to the video. The segment is from 10:30 to 14:07. It may be georestricted to Canada, I don't know.
