5 Things to Know: Thursday, October 8

Welcome to 5 Things to Know – a daily rundown of things you might want to be aware of if you live in, visit, or just like being aware about what’s going on in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. As always, thank you for your continued support of Cactus Hugs.

1) The Coronavirus

The big news continues to be what’s happening in Washington DC where, ummm…

Turning to news from our area, Riverside County reported 283 new cases and one new death in the last 24 hours. Here is the latest on what’s going on in the desert:

More:

  • A poll of Californians found that parents mostly disapprove of distance learning, though about half responded that their own district was handling it well.
  • Mitch McConnell admitted he hasn’t been to the White House since the beginning of August because of their lack of precautions in dealing with coronavirus.
  • After reminding a customer that their restaurant had a mask policy for people entering and leaving, a douchebag in Pennsylvania left only a four letter tip:

2) The Palm Springs Tramway is Reopening

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway has announced they will be back in operation on Friday.  The popular attraction will limit the number of riders (only 12 per car…down from 80 during normal times), require reservations in advance, will require masks, and will have new sanitization policies in effect.

3) Palm Springs Hiker Rescued, in Critical Condition

A hiker rescued in Indian Canyons on Thursday is in critical condition.  The woman, who officials told the Desert Sun was about 80-years-old, suffered a heat-related emergency and was taken by helicopter to the hospital.

4) Hold on, Man!

A video recorded a couple of weeks ago in Redlands is making the rounds and, wow!!

The video’s description says the tree trimmer was able to get down from the tree safely.

5) Here’s Where to Drop Off Your Ballot

Yeah, yeah…I know, this was posted here four days now.  But, ballots are just arriving and I  just want to make sure everyone has the info to make their vote count, since that seems pretty important this year.

Also, for anyone who wonders why they got a notification last week and why it’s taking so long, the county told KESQ that the state notified voters early (last week) and ballots were mailed on Monday.

Your mail-in ballot is on the way (or, maybe already in your mailbox) and you’re probably pretty motivated to vote this year. But, as you may have heard, Donald Trump has been trying to slow down the mail for months because he’s desperate and he knows he’s behind.

So, you may be thinking that you might prefer to drop off your ballot, rather than put it in the mail.  If so, here’s a list of dates and places you can do that in Riverside County.

Important: Before you drop off or mail your ballot, make sure you sign the envelope and that your signature matches the one on your driver’s license, state ID or the signature you provided when registering. The county elections office will compare them to protect your vote.

Stay safe.  Stay smart.  Stay cool. Wear a mask.

💚🌵
