12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos, a book review

A book review written by Lee Sonogan

448 pages (2018) Self-help, Personal growth, ethics

“If you peel back the verbiage, the cerebral preening, you are left with a hardline self-help manual of self-reliance, good behaviour, self-betterment and individualism that probably reflects [Peterson’s] childhood in rural Canada in the 1960s” – Melanie Reid The Times

Unconsciously you will know what this Book speaks about as it is the truth as old as language itself. Reading at least two other books considered as self-help books, the third one was the best. Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for life establishes the principles of life emphasising the importance of ethics/morals more than just the expected psychology that is taught.

Going deep into the advice anyone could use to better their life, the information made me think that I could be a psychologist, haha. Each chapter or rule may not be relatable to everyone although it is very thought-provoking. As it references philosophy, mythology, religion and personal anecdotes, it speaks to people who need help or tools in becoming something greater than they already are.

Other than being the best personal growth-related content within a book, this was the first audiobook I listened to. As I have heard, the author narrating his own book adds extra interest. How he articulates his thoughts on what strengthens the mind may be overlooked by some but worth the consumption in dealing with the harsh realities of life.

Outline of rules in the book:

  1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back
  2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
  3. Make friends with people who want the best for you
  4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today
  5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them
  6. Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world
  7. Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)
  8. Tell the truth – or, at least, don’t lie
  9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don’t
  10. Be precise in your speech
  11. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding
  12. Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street

There is so many quotes in this book that is able to change your mind on many topics. One example being my views on raising children. My list of quotes will be provided at the bottom of this paragraph is a link. This is a type of book that I want to write in the future due to the sheer solid advice in using the negative to learn and overcome. And the importance of god or bringing out your true self from within.

I wish this book had been around when I was younger and highly recommend it to anyone who needs some enlightenment in their life. The knowledge takes you on a journey towards the long change into long-lasting peace throughout the fire. Bluntly spoken with passion, rage, and love, in finding balance in life, you need to understand what is between all the chaos and find the order that is pure enough to execute and develop.

8/10
