On this day after Christmas, I still feel hungover. Boxing day is an annual event that most people know that has cheaper deals in various stores. But what else does the 26th of December hold out though history? More facts and figures then you would initially expect.

  1. 268 Saint Dionysius, Roman Pope (259-260), dies
  2. 887 Berengar I is elected as king of Italy by the lords of Lombardy. He is crowned with the Iron Crown of Lombardy at Pavia.
  3. 1481 Battle at Westbroek: Dutch army beats Utrecht
  4. 1492 1st Spanish settlement La Navidad in the New World is founded by Christopher Columbus
  5. 1606 First known performance of William Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear”
  6. 1620 Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Báthory’s crimes and serial murders are uncovered
  7. 1776 George Washington defeats Hessians at Battle of Trenton in American Revolutionary War
  8. 1790 Louis XVI of France gives his public assent to Civil Constitution of the Clergy during the French Revolution.
  9. 1792 Trial of French King Louis XVI, court hears the kings defense brought by Raymond Desèze
  10. 1793 Battle of Geisberg: French defeat Austrians.
  11. 1799 Henry Lee III’s eulogy to George Washington in congress declares him as “first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen”.
  12. 1806 Battles of Pultusk and Golymin: Russian forces hold French forces under Napoleon.
  13. 1811 A theater fire in Richmond, Virginia kills the Governor of Virginia George William Smith and the president of the First National Bank of Virginia Abraham B. Venable.
  14. 1825 Advocates of liberalism in Russia rise up against Czar Nicholas I but are suppressed in the Decembrist revolt in Saint Petersburg.
  15. 1860 The first-ever inter-club English association football match takes place between Hallam and Sheffield football clubs in Sheffield.
  16. 1862 American Civil War: The Battle of Chickasaw Bayou begins.
  17. 1865 The coffee percolator was patented by James H. Mason.
  18. 1871 Boxing Day has been an official holiday in England, Wales, Ireland, and Canada.
  19. 1898 Marie and Pierre Curie announce the isolation of radium.
  20. 1908 Texan boxer “Galveston Jack” Johnson knocked out Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia, to become the first black boxer to win the world heavyweight title.
  21. 1933 Japan – Nissan Started Nissan car company is started in Japan, it begins by selling it’s cars under the Datsun name.
  22. 1941 Winston Churchill became the first British prime minister to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress.
  23. 1941 U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a bill establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day in the United States.
  24. 1943 Earl Claus von Stauffenberg vain with bomb to Hitlers headquarter
  25. 1947 Heavy snow blanketed the Northeast, burying New York City under 26.4 inches of snow in 16 hours; the severe weather was blamed for some 80 deaths.
  26. 1956 Fidel Castro attempted a secret landing in Cuba to overthrow the Batista regime. All but 11 of his supporters were killed.
  27. 1959 The first charity walk took place, along Icknield Way, in aid of the World Refugee Fund.
  28. 1963 The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “I Saw Her Standing There” are released in the United States, marking the beginning of Beatlemania.
  29. 1965 Paul McCartney is interviewed on pirate radio station Radio Caroline
  30. 1966 Jimi Hendrix writes “Purple Haze” backstage at the Upper Cut Club, London
  31. 1968 Led Zeppelin’s concert debut in Denver as opener for Vanilla Fudge
  32. 1971 Jared Leto was born
  33. 1972 Harry S. Truman died (Former president of America)
  34. 1973 Horror film “The Exorcist” based on book and screenplay by William Peter Blatty, starring Linda Blair, rated X, premieres – 1st horror film to be nominated for Best Picture
  35. 1975 Tu-144, the world’s first commercial supersonic aircraft, surpassing Mach 2, went into service.
  36. 1978 India’s former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi is released from jail
  37. 1980, Iranian television footage was broadcast in the United States, showing a dozen of the American hostages sending messages to their families.
  38. 1982 TIME’s Man of the Year is a computer
  39. 1987 “Les Miserables” opens at National Theatre of Iceland, Reykjavik
  40. 1991 Jack Ruby’s gun sells for $220,000 in auction
  41. 1991 The Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union meets and formally dissolves the Soviet Union, ending the Cold War.
  42. 1996, 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. (To date, the slaying remains unsolved.)
  43. 1997 The Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat explodes, creating a small tsunami offshore.
  44. 1998 Iraq announced that it would fire on U.S. and British warplanes that patrol the skies over northern and southern Iraq.
  45. 2000 Michael McDermott, age 42, opened fire at his place of employment killing seven people. McDermott had no criminal history.
  46. 2002 The first cloned human baby was born. The announcement was made the December 27 by Clonaid.
  47. 2004 9.3 magnitude earthquake creates a tsunami causing devastation in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and edges of the Indian Ocean, killing 230,000 people
  48. 2005 Boxing Day shooting on a busy shopping street in Toronto.
  49. 2012 China opens the world’s longest high speed rail route from Beijing to Guangzhou
  50. 2018 American Colin O’Brady is the first person to cross Antarctica solo and unassisted after 54 days at the Ross Ice Shelf
