T’Challa: We can still heal you...

Erik Killmonger: Why, so you can lock me up? Nah. Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, ’cause they knew death was better than bondage.

This was the eighteenth film released by Marvel Studios for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Black Panther is a superhero from Marvel comics from the secret city of Wakanda. The secret advanced African nation is powered by vibranium. A vengeful victim/outsider challenges the new king for the throne of Wakanda. With a budget of $200 million it made $1.339 billion at the box office.

Biggest actors in the movie:

  • Chadwick Boseman
  • Michael B. Jordan
  • Martin Freeman
  • Forest Whitaker
  • Daniel Kaluuya
  • And more!

Black Panther is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have its opening weekend domestic box office surpass its production/budget cost. The actor, Wesley Snipes wanted to play the Black Panther in the 1990s ever since Marvel approached him with the project, so he went to Columbia Pictures with a script. Given the limitations in special effects at the time, it did not happen.

Stan Lee the comic-book writer who co-created the Black Panther, appears as a casino guest. Director Ryan Coogler grew up in Oakland, which is also the birthplace of the Black Panther Party, formed in 1966 a few months after Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Black Panther in Fantastic Four Vol. 1, Issue 52. This movie is the first time I have seen a solo Black Panther of anything. I started this movie not knowing what to expect.

Definitely a different kind of superhero. This movie has been compared to the tv show, Game of Thrones. It may have connections to the political philosophy of a form of monarchy while having its own style. Also its soundtrack many times are played are perfect to parts of the story. The ending is interesting enough being long and having a sort of a sad ending. I recommend this movie to superhero fans and people who are interested in a black culture superhero movie.

Okoye: Wakanda forever!
