Hallowe’en Flicks: The Burbs (1989)

Starring: Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Corey Feldman

Director: Joe Dante

Ray (Hanks) is a stressed out man who just needs a break, but when the Klopek’s move in next door, his crazy and nosy neighbours are sure that there’s something very Weird about them. When a local man goes missing and weird sounds come from the Klopek’s basement, they try to convince him that their Satanic murderers. But that kind of thing doens’t happen in the suburbs, does it?

This is an 80’s classic and pokes fun at the American Dream and notions of a safety and normality in suburbia. It’s hilarious, mad cap, weird and wonderful, and has a really great ensemble cast. I have seen this movie loads of times and always love to re-watch it and get something different out of it each time. It’s a comedy with some tropes from horror movies and urban legends, so it’s got the perfect tone for Hallowe’en but it’s not a horror movie and it’s one the whole family can watch. Bruce Dern is wonderful as the crazy conspiracy touting ex-military man and Corey Feldman rounds out the cast as an 80’s staple actor. There’s so much to love in this film.

Scale Of Scary: 1/10 Suburban life is pretty terrifying, but this is a comedy with Hallowe’en vibes for all the family.
