The internet is inundated with organizational tips and tricks for any lifestyle, including for those in college. While many of these informative articles can be helpful, they can also be overwhelming and leave us feeling uninspired.
Here are some organization tips and suggestions, tried and tested by us, that are sure to help keep you on track.
Keep Up the Motivation
The first part of any endeavor and, maybe the most important, is finding a way to stay motivated at all costs. It can be easy to let small responsibilities slide by, like procrastinating on an assignment or skipping just one work shift, when there are other things we’d rather be doing. But skipping out on these smaller responsibilities can actually lead to big consequences, such as failing a class or losing a job.
It’s important to always keep your end goal, the reason why you’re working so hard, top of mind. Staying committed and focused on the end result has to be the main motivation while working and attending college. Try writing your goals down and posting them in a place where they will be seen regularly.
Another great way to try staying focused and motivated is through meditation. Many have found that meditation helps them realize the grand scheme of things and recharges them to push themselves further with greater results.
Working College Students have hectic schedules that can be hard to manage. To stay on top of your schedule and upcoming deadlines, make sure you have a place to keep all of your responsibilities recorded. The good news is that there are tons of great productivity tools out there to help you stay on top of your game.
Tired of looking at a screen? Try use a dry erase board to help keep studies, appointments, and a job all organized. The great thing is that you can make it as customized as you want to fit your exact needs. Organize your board on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. You can also use a color coding system as a visual of upcoming tasks. Try using one color that signifies exams, another color for homework due dates, and a completely different color for a work schedule to provide an instant visual schedule to follow.
When it comes to organization, consistency is key. The first place to try this out is to create a morning routine for yourself. It turns out that setting yourself up for success first thing in the morning and feeling organized throughout the day are directly connected.
Start by waking up at the same time every day. Think about a few tasks that you know need to get done and that you’ll have an easier time getting done with fewer distractions. Maybe it’s checking your email, planning your schedule for the day, or squeezing in some work.
Make sure you take some time in the morning for your personal wellness too. Eat a little something and drink some water. Try squeezing in a quick workout or stretching session. Maybe even catch up on some reading or recent news.
Then make sure to maintain a consistent schedule for things like working out and studying. Try and reserve specific days of the week when you’re focused on school or focused on work. Make sure to leave time in your schedule for yourself too. You want to make sure you don’t burn out.
Planning ahead can sometimes feel like an impossible task when you have a demanding or constantly changing schedule. But there are always smaller things that you can plan ahead for.
Take your clothing, for instance. Try planning your outfit for the next day the night before by setting your clothes and shoes out so they’re easily accessible in the morning. The easier they are to grab, the quicker you can get ready and head out the door.
Also, try doing a five minute cleaning schedule before going to bed. It is amazing how much easier it is to maintain a place just by taking five minutes a night to clean an area before heading to bed. This includes making sure that sure all class books and notes are together and ready for class the next day.
Find Time to Unplug
Creating an organized schedule means also finding time to unplug. It’s essential to set aside a little bit of time to just relax.Taking a break should mean walking away from studies and focus on something else for a period of time.
Try unplugging from your electronics altogether for a little while. Take a walk outside, go for a bicycle ride, or go for a drive. All these activities allow the brain the time it needs to reset and fully absorb all the information you’ve been studying.
Don’t underestimate the importance of staying organized as a working college student. It can mean the difference between dropping the ball and maximizing success!
