Stereotypes: The 6 People in College We All Know

Every College Student knows the basic Stereotypes of the students that they’re surrounded by when sitting in class. While the stereotypes definitely differ across campuses, majors, and classes, there are six basic stereotypes that always seem to come up. We all have at least one friend that fits into each group…and come on, we even fit in with at least one ourselves.

From the Sleeper, snoring and drooling next to you for the entire 50 minutes, to the Overachiever, practically screaming out every answer before the professor can even finish his first word. And yes, I’m sure the professor could identify a few of these stereotypes himself. After all, he is the one watching you drool and grading your wet spit-stained term papers.

While some of these students may be distracting, others are just simply sources of entertainment during a boring lecture. College requires a lot of balance between work and other hobbies, and each person does this in their own way. Naturally, these tactics repeat and develop recognizable stereotypes of college students.

Check out the 6 basic stereotypes of college students below and see if, maybe, one of them is you.

Do you spend your nights up until 4am partying, or finishing an essay? Maybe you’re the Partier or the Procrastinator. As much as I hate to admit it, I definitely fit into the Procrastinator group. Guilty!

Or, do you eat a full meal, no matter what the stench or how distracting in every class you take? Then perhaps you are the Snacker.

If these aren’t ringing a bell, then maybe you are the Chit-Chatter. Think about it: if you have a friend in every class, will talk to anyone that will listen, and have even been called out for chattering in a 500-person lecture hall, then this may be you. Each of us, even if we may not realize it, probably fits into one of these stereotypes of college students ourselves.

Many students fit into these 6 categories, but stereotypes may change school-to-school, major-to-major, or even just class-to-class. What other stereotypes have you noticed among the students in your classes?
