The warm-up game between Angola and South Africa has been called off ahead of AFCON 2019. Angola withdrew from the game unilaterally on account of lack of preparation. The decision wasn’t hailed by the Bafana Bafana’s coach Stuart Baxter.
South Africa did play at warm-up against Ghana. They wanted to have another game under their belt before going into the AFCON. But Angola refused to play just hours before the kick-off.
The AFCON2019 is hosted by Egypt. 24 teams are divided into six groups. South Africa is placed in group D along with Ivory Coast, Namibia, and Morocco. South Africa will face Ivory Coast in their opening encounter on 24th of this month.
Dean Furman, the South African midfielder, was sanguine of South Africa’s healthy preparation. He said that Bafana stars will put a lot better show this time around.
South Africa didn’t qualify for the event in 1994. But they stood out as the champions of Africa in 1996. South Africa were the hosts, Nelson Mandela, was one of the spectators, and Bafana Bafana stars ran over their opponents to become the champions of Africa.
South Africa didn’t qualify for the previous edition of AFCON in Gabon. And they were the last of the 4 teams to have made through AFCON 2019.
South Africa had beaten Tunisia (2-0) to win the title back in 1996 and emerged on the scenes of a global football arena.
