According to Barbara Underwood, the charitable foundation had found engaged in unlawful political co-ordination which planned to influence on the 2016 election.
The lawsuit pursues to close the foundation, Ms. Underwood further said. However, the foundation denied the charges. It called them politically motivated.
Ms. Underwood said in a statement that Mr. Trump had illegally instructed the foundation to provide support to his presidential campaign. The foundation supports the presidential campaign by using foundation’s name and funds.
Likewise, the petition claims that Mr. Trump used charitable assets to pay off legal duties to support his own businesses and to purchase personal items.
The attorney general is also looking for to bar the president and three of his adult children, Donald Jr, Eric, and Ivanka.
The president responded back at the lawsuit on Twitter that “sleazy New York Democrats” were “doing everything they can to sue me”.
What are the charges?
The lawsuit claims that the foundation paid $100,000 (£75,000) to settle legal claims against Mr. Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort as well as $158,000 to resolve claims against one of his golf clubs and $10,000 to purchase a painting of Mr. Trump to hang at another of his golf clubs.
Ms. Underwood said, “As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose of legality. This is not how private foundations should function.”
