The swollen Seine River water increases more than four meters above its usual level (5.85 metres, 19.2 feet) which has become a severe problem for commuters along with people living near its overflowing banks.
The flood level expected to begin receding after Tuesday. The heavy rainfall which lasted for weeks has produced a relentless rise in water level.
The rescue teams have evacuated around 1500 people from their homes in the greater Paris region. On the other hand, still many homes are without electricity.
Earlier, the last significant flood in Paris observed in 2016 wherein the river reached a high of 6.1m level.
Seven stations of a main commuter line have shut till at least 5 February. A lower level housing Islamic artwork at the Louvre also closed to visitors while other famous attractions like Musée d’Orsay and Orangerie gallery are on high alert.
In city outskirts, many areas are still under the water with residents are moving around in boats. The school has closed while dozens rescued from homes.
A local said: “Everyone is getting around by boat. The mood is still good, we are used to it – in 20 years we are on our eighth or ninth flood”.
Water levels still expected to high due to coming of more rain to exacerbate an already waterlogged soil.
