Police has arrested 140 people of lynch mobs in south-east African state of Malawi. The members of lynch mobs accused of vampirism.
They clamped down after a wave of attacks in which at least nine people killed including two men in Blantyre. Police reported that one of the victims set on fire while another stoned.
Two others also arrested for frightening to suck people’s blood. However, police found no evidence of any actual bloodsucking in their medical reports.
In September, vigilante mobs started triggered attacks on people. They suspected of drinking human blood as part of the magic rituals.
Malawi’s national police spokesperson, James Kaledzera told media that police patrols had marched up in affected areas. In southern parts, the curfew has imposed.
Lexon Kachama, Inspector General of Malawi Police told media that “We have so far arrested 140 people we suspect are behind the mob killings in Blantyre and other districts and the investigations are still going on.”
Police ensure that the violence did not spread to other cities and townships, he further added. President Peter Mutharika has declared to investigate the killings during his visit. Earlier, the UN requested all staff in south to move in safer areas.
Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries where educational standards are low, especially, with acceptance in witchcraft widespread.
