German Bomb disposal squad disarmed a massive 1.8 tonne bomb in Frankfurt on Sunday as thousands of people residing nearby were asked to leave to safer destinations.
This is the biggest ever evacuation in Germany since the World War II as the bomb was discovered on a building site last week.
More than 60,000 people were asked to flee as the ‘remains’ of the 20th century calamity were to be diffused.
Some of the families refused to quit the scene which caused delay in disarming the 1.8 tonne explosive.
Helicopters with heat sensing equipments were used to cordon off the area and look for any passer nearby.
More than a thousand emergency aid workers helped clearing the area.
People were filed into a temporary shelter at Frankfurt’s trade fair site.
The bomb was dropped by British Royal Force during the Second World War of 1939-45.
The device was named ‘Blockbuster’ by the local media.
British and American jets rocked Germany with 1.5 million tonnes of bomb 15% of which failed to detonate and are discovered time to time in different parts of the country.
