Arsene Wenger is confident Alexis Sanchez will be ‘100 % committed’ to the club despite his Deadline Day move to Manchester City failing to materialise.
On Deadline Day, City had a £60m bid for Sanchez accepted by the Gunners but the deal collapsed when Arsenal were unable to sign Thomas Lemar as a replacement.
Next summer, Sanchez’s Arsenal contract runs out and he will be able to discuss a move with foreign clubs as soon as 2018 begins. Wenger is confident that the striker will continue to play at his maximum even if he does decide to pursue a move away from the club.
Wenger said, “Your interest is always to perform and he is 100 per cent committed, I have no doubt about that. It’s very difficult for me to speak about what happened because what I want the player to do now is focus on his career, on his season and on Arsenal Football Club.
“I spoke before about integrity and values and I always make sure my commitment is at the level expected from the people who pay me and have confidence in me. I think the players’ side is exactly the same.”
Wenger also revealed that Sanchez’s move to City was very far from being completed.
“It was not very close, it’s very difficult for me to speak about that because what I want now is the player to focus on his career, on his season and Arsenal. I always think first, make sure that my commitment is at the level that is expected from people paying me and have confidence in me. On the player’s side, it is exactly the same.”
