We’ve been noticing a steady flow of leaks showcasing possible design, features, and specifications of upcoming Samsung Note 8. While many of them point to a powerful flagship, it’s not all good news. The recent renders and leaks have made clear that Samsung is ignoring critical feedback around Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus and is set to carry on with an awkward design mistake by choice.
According to these leaks Note looks more like Sony Experia than Samsung S8
As Samsung is having alot of difficulties to place the fingerprint sensor under the screen of the upcoming phablet. If this had been achieved it would have given Samsung an impressive technological placement after Chinese companies VIVO and DOOGEE. Unfortunately it has been reported that the part of the screen with the sensor was not able to be color-matched to the rest of the screen.
The Galaxy Note 8 will retain the expansive and dominant screen, but the requirements in the Android specifications for a fingerprint scanner mean that it has to go somewhere else. And Samsung’s answer appears to be ‘put it next to the camera on the rear of the device’.
The location of the fingerprint sensor is one of the design mistakes in the Galaxy S8 family. Short of tucking it along one of the edges (many companies including Sony placed sensor on side) it is either on the front fascia of the handset, or placed somewhere on the rear.
There could be two features that will set Note 8 apart from Galaxy S8, one dual 12MP camera setup and 6GB RAM while Samsung Galaxy S8 have 4GB.
The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature a 6.3-inch QHD+ Infinity Display, a 12-megapixel optically stabilized dual-camera setup with dual-pixel phase detection autofocus and 4K video recording, Exynos 8895 and some units may have Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. The phone is rumored to pack in 3300 mAh battery, which is smaller than the Galaxy S8 Plus’ 3,500-mAh battery with slightly larger display. Thickness of Note 8 could be 9.5 including camera buldge, it makes it thicker than any modern flagship.
With the South Korean company maximizing the screen real-estate on the front of the Note 8 (and presumably using a virtual home button as pioneered in the Galaxy S8 family) the sensor is destined for the back of the unit. The latest renders by one of the most trustworthy leakster @onleaks all agree on one thing – it’s going to be part of a camera bulge at the rear.
Expected to be announced in the second half of September.
That’s going to place the sensor right next to the dual camera lenses with the resulting smears of oils and grime that has dogged S8 users. It’s likely that the size of the Note 8 will put a bit more distance between the biometric and the visual sensor, but thanks to the size of the phablet that’s also going to put the sensor even further away from your finger’s natural resting place.
In an ideal world, Samsung would not be facing this issue
Note 8 would continue the ‘all-screen’ story and will ditch physical home button for one on the expansive OLED screen. Samsung’s technology for an on-screen fingerprint reader needs more development time. That means it needs to fall back to a secondary option.
