“Metamorphosis”(2022): Investigating Man's “True Nature”
Some say men are savages.
As we humans are all animals, and some animals are savage, does it follow then that this is more than a quaint colloquialism?
I don’t know.
I do know that in the skin-crawling horror trip “Metamorphosis” we watch as a man (Gil McKinneyis exceptional), systematically consumed by his most base and barbaric urges, reducesanalready distant wife (Natasha Krishnan, also superb) to little more than mortified collateral damage.
His true hedonistic nature boiling over, bursting to the surface in a rage of bloody carnage? This would seem to be the thrust of “Metamorphosis” writer and director Alex Smoots’s terrifying treatise on modern male masculinity.
One thing for certain. This is a deeply disturbing chronicle of one soul regressing, the other progressing.
Each destined down a path none of us would ever want to follow.
