The UT Administration has introduced Electric Buses in the city beautiful to control the pollution as part of the smart city project. Residents will soon see the electric buses running on roads of Chandigarh as the first bus has arrived here. The UT Transport department, before placing the order for the electric buses had asked companies to ply the bus in the city on a trial basis. Tata Motors had agreed to ply a bus in the city on a trial basis. These trials will show the effectiveness of these buses.

The Electric buses are already running successfully across abroad and trials are going on in some other cities also including Bengaluru, New Delhi and Pune. Here are some of the features of the Electric Bus you might want to know:

– The bus has a seating capacity of 26 and nearly 9 passengers can stand inside it. It also has a provision for differently abled persons. The seats of the bus are comfortable.

– The Electric buses will cover distance of 150km 180 km with one time charging. Chandigarh Transportation Undertaking (CTU) will provide arrangements for charging buses at its depot.

– Electric Buses will have all the facilities for the safety of the passengers including Public Address System, AC, CCTV Camera and fire fighting equipment.

– According to the UT Officials, these buses are a zero emission vehicle and are safer than other buses.

– The operational cost of these Electric buses is lower than the cost of other buses.

Due to these the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has invited expression of interest from the manufacturers of these buses. The companies have been asked to submit their proposal. The work on the project has started after approval from UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore, who had asked officials to develop the UT as a green city on the pattern of Bristol.

The Centre is providing subsidy to introduce zero-emission retrofitted electric buses under its flagship FAME India (faster adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles in India) scheme.
