I doodle. Those of you who follow me on FB will have seen my latest output. And there doesn’t seem to be any end to it for now. Some have taken issue with me calling them ‘doodles’ when, admittedly, the level of detail, the time, and the apparent effort, put into these ‘simple’ scribblings qualifies them as art. Or at the very least, craft. I hope to explain some of the reason for my collecting of them under this moniker in this post (and finally post some of the finished pencils I have so far.)
This is more an explanation of how I conceive the workings of my mind than it is about the doodles specifically. I came up with the thought of categorising them as ‘non-linguistic Stream of consciousness essays’ as I was walking to work this morning, and this got me thinking:
We all have a continual stream of thoughts flowing through our minds and we pick an choose the ideas to pluck from it to express or act upon. I tend to ignore mine generally (from here on referred to as ‘The Stream’), drowning it out with music which I unconsciously whistle or sing along to. I don’t try and consciously recall any of this stream unless an Idea or thought catches my attention and requires pinning down. In these cases I’ll either write it down and encage it with words, slam it out into Reason with my USB MIDI Keyboard, talk it over to myself (No idea if I’m crazy or not, I’ve not been tested), or scribble out a doodle on the page I happen to be working on at the moment.
Admittedly, more and more pre-planning is going into the composition of these pages, but the individual shapes and their arrangement is entirely spontaneous. This is from the point of view of my conscious mind obviously, those shapes, forms and how they’re combined have to come from somewhere. my reasoning is that they come from The Stream.
I believe them to be representations of thinking and ideas that there are no suitable words, or musical concoctions, to express. I can’t translate them, and they are untranslatable. There is meaning, but it is inexpressible and ephemeral. Captured in a curve or line and it’s position.
If you see something in them, then it is entirely yours. You cannot discern the meaning inherent in it and I cannot explain it to you because neither can I.
I will continue to produce these as long as the compulsion to do so is there, and will be looking into producing purchasable finished products based on them if anyone is interested in having copies. The potential is there to produce a continuous stream of these, and if I can build a reliable income stream from them there is the possibility of doing it full time.
The Stream itself is never ending, it just depends on what floats to the surface…
