Joyden Canton Orchard – new Chinese restaurant in Shaw House Isetan Scotts

Joyden Canton Orchard is a new Chinese restaurant in Shaw Centre. It is run by the Joyden Concept restaurant group that has been slowly but steadily increasing their presence in Singapore. One of their sub-brands is Joyden Canton which serves Cantonese Cuisine. It opened their first outlet in the HillV2 Shopping Mall in 2015. Joyden Canton Orchard in Isetan Scotts Shaw House is the second Canton outlet.

Joyden Canton Orchard is located on the 4th level of Shaw House. There is a cluster of restaurants around the circular atrium which is connected to Isetan Scotts. We believe Joyden occupies the space formerly used by a Japanese restaurant. Another change that we noticed was that the Dome Cafe is no longer there. Its space is now used for the sale of mattresses.  Visiting Joyden Canton Orchard from the street level, the fastest way is to take the express escalator that leads to the Lido cinema. Get off on level 3 and change over to a regular escalator in Isetan to go up one level.

Having visited Joyden Canton HillV2 which impressed us by its decor, we thought that the newer one at Orchard was not as impressive. It is efficiently and simply furnished but lacked the sparkle of its older sibling.

Joyden Canton Orchard menu

Joyden Canton serves a wide range of Cantonese dishes, including some dim sum at lunch time.  As the menu is quite extensive, these are just some sample pages from the Joyden Canton Orchard menu.

We tried a couple of dim sum dishes – Crystal Dumpling with Spinach and Scallop ($5.80) and Teochew Vegetable Dumpling ($5).  They were well made dim sum dishes but not memorable. It was the other dishes that shone that day.

For our other dishes, we tried a trio of dishes which were the specialities of the restaurant, denoted by  a chef’s hat symbol on the menu.

The double boiled old coconut soup with farm chicken ($14) was an unusual but wonderful soup.  The chicken broth cooked in a coconut had a layer of coconut taste in the background. It is a taste that is obvious but yet subtle.  It is certainly a dish that is worth trying.

The almond and salted egg prawn ($21) was also very good.  Each prawn with salted egg flavouring was encrusted with a thick layer of almond flakes.

Pork ribs are a common item in Chinese restaurants. The chargrilled, slow braised prime pork ribs ($20) at Joyden Canton Orchard stands out from the others by the marinade and barbecue sauce applied over it.  It had a blend of tangy citrus flavours and orange peel.  Very good indeed, probably the best dish of the day.

Our final dish was a dish of beancurd and cabbage ($18).  The best part of this dish was the tasty pieces of beancurd. The cabbage part was quite plain.

Overall, while the dim sum items we tried that day were quite average,  the other Cantonese dishes at Joyden Canton Orchard were interesting.  The decor and service may not be as polished as some of the better known names in town, but we like the extra effort put into the dishes to make them stand out from the norm.
