Geylang Serai is one of the best places to eat tasty Malay Food. There are so many restaurants and food vendors there. You know a place serves authentic and delicious local food when you see it is full of locals enjoying their food. Alwadi is such a place. It is open round the clock and it always seem to be bustling with activities. It is a little food court in a coffeeshop with a good range of Malay and Indian Muslim food, and also where you can get the famous Haig Road Putu Piring.

Located at the junction of Geylang Road and Onan Road, Alwadi at Geylang Serai occupies the ground floor of the Tristar Complex. There are a few tables inside the coffeeshop but the main seating areas are outdoor under the awnings. The whole place has a green and orange theme; and so you get green plastic chairs and orange tabletops and the staff have green and orange shirts.

There is a good range of stalls in Alwadi at Geylang Serai. Right upfront, there is a take-way counter selling curry puffs, goreng pisang, yu zha kueh and all sorts of Malay, Indian and Chinese fritters.

Roti prata, roti John and murtabak are made fresh at the stall which also serves Indian and Malay dishes with rice. Traditional noodles like mee soto and mee rebus are also available.

There is an Indian Rojak stall which also serves thosai. Opposite it is a stall dedicated to apam, which is offered in a wide variety of flavours

There are also vendors selling noodle soups, chicken rice and even a zhi char stall where you can order dishes like hotplate tofu and cereal prawns.

We have tried food from various stalls in Alwadi at Geylang Serai. The putu piring was  excellent. The other items we had sampled were simple street food of decent quality and enjoyable. Alwadi is a place you need to experience for yourself.  We shall just show you a few photos to whet your appetite.

The range of cuisines available at Alwadi is a reflection of multi-cultural Singapore. The prices are reasonable and you can eat there anytime of the day, all the time. It is thus not surprising that Alwadi at Geylang Serai is a place where Singaporeans, regardless of race, language or religion, can be seen enjoying their food.
