Video: JRAD Wraps “Bird Song” Around “Day Tripper” at The Capitol Theatre

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD) continue to shape and sculpt The Grateful Dead’s expansive live repertoire in ways Jerry Garcia never dreamed.

Case in point is JRAD’s final show of 2016, December 30th, at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester. The band rounded out the year with an unheard-of sequencing of songs that included this wild super-sandwich: “Bird Song Jam”> “Day Tripper”> “Bird Song”> “King Solomon’s Marbles”> “Bird Song Reprise.”

As far as DeadBase stats go, The Dead played The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” only a handful of times in the mid-’80s, and the band never positioned the song next to “Bird Song” (or even close to it). JRAD’s shows are known for their roller-coaster setlists – mellow to raging and back again. The band’s December 30th performance is no exception.

If you haven’t seen JRAD yet, do yourself a favor and get out to a show in 2017. You’ll be very glad you did. JRAD will be at this year’s Lockn’ Festival in August.

The band has shared this pro-shot video on YouTube. Put on your flame-retardant jumpsuit, because this is hot as hell. (Drop straight into one of the band’s towering peaks at about 6:50.)
