When I first started writing, my go-to tool was Grammarly. The free version caught most of my spelling errors. After signing up for the Premium version, I suddenly realized how many mistakes I made. Ever since then, I’ve used Grammarly Premium to check my content before publishing.

However, while scrolling through social media, I saw an ad for a proofreader called Stylewriter. It claimed to be able to check your writing for style, spelling, and grammar issues. After downloading the software, I used it to check my writing for mistakes I missed.

That's why it's common to make many spelling and grammar errors. When you paste your work into Grammarly, you fix most small mistakes and inconsistencies. This way, your editor doesn't have to focus on minor issues and can concentrate on more significant problems like plot holes.

Grammarly's plugin is also convenient. It suggests changes to your writing when using Google Docs or Microsoft Word. This grammar checking feature saves a lot of time. You won't have to go to their website and copy and paste your content every time. Simply type your content into Google Docs or MS Word, and you're good to go.

To avoid this, use Grammarly's browser extension. It's compatible with Gmail and Outlook. This way, your sales team can close deals without worrying about typos.

As a freelance writer, Grammarly has helped me since I started my career. In the beginning, I struggled with structuring my sentences correctly, and my articles were a mess. However, when using Grammarly Premium, it spotted many advanced issues like:

Stylewriter Vs Grammarly: Our Test

We used Stylewriter and Grammarly to check several blog posts and other forms of content. During our test, we looked at a few key areas. These include:

Ease Of Use

The simplicity of software is one of the most essential traits. A writing tool can be super accurate, but it loses some of its appeals if it's challenging to use.

After using both tools for a while, I noticed that Stylewriter is one of the most complicated tools to use. Once you've copied your content and opened Stylewriter, you'll see several options, icons, and graphs.

Some include:

• Jargon phrases

These features aren't neatly organized or easy to understand. So you need to go to its website and browse through the help section a few times to get an in-depth understanding.

The interface also looks old. It doesn't have that modern feel you get with most writing software.

In comparison, Grammarly is super easy to use. If you've installed the browser extension or desktop app, it'll make suggestions as you're typing.

Or, if you prefer to copy and paste your work, you'll see all suggestions on the right. You also get access to helpful features like a plagiarism checker and professional editor. This makes correcting your work uncomplicated.

Accuracy

A proofreader must be accurate to be considered a practical choice. Many proofreaders on the market are easy to use and affordable, but they fail to catch basic mistakes.

After using Stylewriter and Grammarly, I found that both tools are accurate but in different ways.

Grammarly mainly fixes grammar, spelling, and style issues. For example, if your sentences are difficult to understand, Grammarly points them out and tells you how to improve.

Stylewriter mainly focuses on glue words, passive voice, and overused words. This increases the readability of your content. Without a passive voice, your writing sounds strong and reads better. By using Stylewriter to spot and remove glue and filler words, your content instantly becomes more valuable.

However, Stylewriter makes many wrong suggestions. For example, if you're writing an essay containing the word “interface”, then Stylewriter will suggest you swap it out for “boundary” or “link”. This makes no sense.

When checking this article with Grammarly, it made 25 suggestions.

When I pasted it into Stylewriter, it found 27 style issues. However, some of them were inaccurate.

If you're on a budget, then pricing is an essential factor to look at. Luckily, both Grammarly and Stylewriter are affordable tools:

If you decide to sign up for a Stylewriter account, you'll notice they don't offer monthly or yearly plans. However, you can buy their software for a once-off price. Three different premium plans are available:

1. Starter Edition costs $120
2. Standard Edition costs $150
3. Professional Edition costs $190

Stylewriter also offers a 14-day free trial when you download the software. It gives you access to many features you'll receive with the starter plan. This allows you to get used to the software.

You can access features like a passive index, word count, spelling checks, and grammar rewrites with the starter plan. You receive additional features like a jargon checker, statistics summary, and practical graphs if you sign up for the standard option. With its professional plan, you can use advanced editor lists to check for wordy sentences and word frequency.

When signing up for Grammarly Premium, you can choose between three pricing plans:

1. A monthly plan costing $29.95 per month
2. The quarterly plan costs $59.95 every three months
3. An annual plan costing $139 per year

Although Grammarly's plans are more expensive since you need to make recurring payments, it's quite affordable. When I started writing, I used Grammarly Premium, and I barely made any money.

However, for students or those on a budget, Stylewriter is cheaper. After buying the software, you don't have to worry about monthly payments.

Stylewriter Offers Free Writing Advice

It's always helpful to have access to additional features. A feature on Stylewriter that helped me was their video lessons and tutorials. It's in-depth and explains many hard-to-understand topics. 

For example, I didn't know where to start when I wanted to spice up my cover letter a few weeks ago. But after reading Stylewriter's article on how to write a cover letter, the process became less challenging.

This makes Stylewriter a practical resource. Especially if you're a new writer, you'll want to take advantage of their free content and courses.

Grammarly Provides Advanced Integration Features

Grammarly's integration features helped me save a lot of time over the years. With its browser extension, you can use the tool on almost any website or browser. This includes:

Also, with its mobile app available for iOS and Android users, you can text on the go. This way, you don't have to spend time reading over your message to ensure it sounds good.

Areas For Improvement

Now that we've covered how these tools face-off, let's look at where they can improve:

1. Stylewriter doesn't offer integration features
2. Grammarly's professional editor is expensive

Stylewriter Doesn't Offer Integration Features

When using Stylewriter, you'll need to copy and paste your writing into the software every time. This is inconvenient since you can't check your writing directly from Gmail, Facebook, or Google Docs.

I'd like to see Stylewrite develop a Chrome extension or add-on that allows users to check their work without copying and pasting every time. Other proofreaders like Hemingway Editor, Ginger, Whitesmoke, and ProWritingAid offer helpful integration features.

Grammarly's Professional Editor Is Expensive

Grammarly's real-life editor is a practical option if you're swamped and struggling to meet deadlines. These editors make sure your writing is error-free and reads well. However, it can get expensive in the long run, especially if you're using it regularly.

To fix this, I'd like to see Grammarly offer a bulk special. So if you're checking a certain amount of words, Grammarly gives you a discount. This option is more practical for writers who use professional editors regularly.

An easy-to-use and accurate editing tool is a must for every writer, student, and business owner. It allows you to fix most errors without reading through your copy several times.
