Before Colin Trevorrow co-writes the Jurassic World sequel and directs Star Wars: Episode IX, he is going back to non-blockbuster filmmaking with The Book of Henry this summer. While there are no raptors or lightsabers in the first trailer for the film, there is an unnaturally gifted youngster who enlists his mother and younger brother's help in a heroic mission.
Naomi Watts is the mother to super genius 11-year-old Henry, who finds out his new neighbor and classmate is being victimized by her stepfather, and has written a whole book of plans to save her.
Although Room's Jacob Tremblay has his name above the title with his Shut In co-star Watts, it is Jaeden Lieberher who actually plays the titular Henry. This is the second new trailer in as many days to feature Lieberher, who will go from taking on an abusive stepfather to facing the slightly more monstrous clown Pennywise in It this September.
The Book of Henry is meant to be less terrifying, although whether or not Trevorrow makes a story about saving a little girl from child abuse too whimsical is yet to be seen. Yet the film's first poster from earlier this week certainly makes it seem like something out of a Steven Spielberg fantasy movie.
While The Book of Henry may be firmly set in the real world, this is Trevorrow's first ever mainstream movie not driven by special effects, since he lept from the small indie Safety Not Guaranteed right into Jurassic World. Depending on how the Jurassic World Sequel and Episode IX turn out, Trevorrow may not make a movie like this again for at least a while.
The Book of Henry will be opened either way on June 16, as it goes up against Cars 3 from Trevorrow's future Disney bosses.
