2017 Oscar Nominations Make History With 'La La Land''s Record Tying Haul

In 88 years of Oscar nominations, only Titanic and All About Eve had their names called 14 times before La La Land. Now the movie that already won the most Golden Globes in history has a chance to match Oscar history, although matching the Oscar record of 11 victories may still be a tough task.

Nonetheless, the one big award for Best Picture is one of the many well within its grasp, with only Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight in its way in the climactic category.

As for Damien Chazelle, he just has Barry Jenkins, Mel Gibson, Kenneth Lonergan and Denis Villeneuve in his way for Best Director, while Ryan Gosling has to upset Casey Affleck, Denzel Washington, Andrew Garfield and Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor, and Emma Stone has to hold off Natalie Portman, Isabelle Huppert, Meryl Streep and Ruth Negga for Best Actress.

Negga's inclusion over Amy Adams was one of the only mild surprises in the major categories, along with Michael Shannon beating out Golden Globe winning Nocturnal Animals co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hugh Grant for the last Best Supporting Actor slot. Otherwise, everything largely went according to convention, right down to La La Land's record-tying nomination performance.

Moonlight and Arrival led the rest of the pack with eight nominations, followed by six for Manchester by the Sea, Hacksaw Ridge and Lion. They may all have to look up to La La Land in the final victory totals a month from now as well, but the question is how many scraps they can all get for themselves in the meantime, if any.

Those questions will be answered on Feb. 26 on ABC, with the full list of the invited nominees below.
