Mirzya Movie Review: Love Tale Does Not Stand To The Expectations

Mirzya accounts for everything that should be held for a musical romance. Fresh faces Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, excellent music, strong supporting cast and beautiful songs written by Gulzar.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra recreated the Punjabi folktale of Mirza and Sahibaan in the present scenario of Rajasthan.

Positives

A story of love, faith, hope and betrayal, the story has lent itself to the magnificence portrayed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. And there was no better than the Dadasaheb Phalke award winner Gulzar to translate the story into a film through the screenplay and lyrics. It also carries the Romeo Juliet touch to emphasize on the hard fight of the lovers against the world. How a little boy moons after a girl, a woman tattered between her family and lover can be felt from the songs.

Mirzya is more about the scenes. It has given some spectacular sequences which we have not seen in the recent times. The characters grab us and keep in line with them.

It is a complete eye candy. Shot in Rajasthan location that takes your breath away. Despite being overused in Bollywood, grand forts, glittering deserts, picturesque hamlets and undulating dunes along with the grand costumes of Rajwadaas, the film is a visual treat.

The Downfall

Suchi (Saiyami Kher) and Mohnish (Harshvardhan Kapoor), the childhood sweethearts get very attached to each other in the initial segment of the film. They part and meet again in different circumstances.

However, the film starts going down in the adult hood of Suchi and Adil Mohnish. Suchi is curly haired engaged to Prince Karan. She bumps into Adil Mohnish and they rekindle their old memories. Soon, its gets stuck in silliness. The film gives no answers to a few questions and Suchi and Adil come and go with minus impact.

Lovers could not set the screen on fire. Except for a scene towards the end where the two really look into each other’s eyes and break out laughing, there are merely any such scenes showing chemistry between the two.

The romance does not work. Harshvardhan and Saiyami could not create a world of lovers where no one else is allowed. Kapoor could manage to fare a little more than his affectionless lady Saiyami Kher but still both of the newcomers could no lift up the screen with their acting potential. Harshvardhan has a spark in him which needs to get polished for the final surfacing.

You can see the difference between his first film and his father Anil Kapoor’s first film. That the difference between an inborn actor and a groomed actor.

Mirzya disappoints at the end. It’s even more dispiriting when all the talent has gathered together.
