The SyFy Channel Announces Its CHUCKY Series and New Details

Child’s Play creator Don Mancini has been producing a new horror TV series called Chucky. It was reported a year ago that the show was now picked up by the SyFy Channel. Now, SyFy officially announced that they have given Chucky a straight-to-series order.

The series will spin around the character of the franchise and that is Chucky. The red-haired doll possessed by the soul of the infamous serial killer, Charles Lee Ray. Chucky movie franchise creator and writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner are developing the show as well as TV writer-producer Nick Antosca, creator of Syfy’s anthology series Channel Zero. Mancini will also write the series, and work as showrunner, and direct the first episode of the upcoming show.

In the new Chucky series, “after a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.”

Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks – USA & Syfy asid in a statement:

“The character Don and David created has terrified audiences for over 30 years. The longevity and legacy of Chucky speaks to the creative storytelling and the loyal fans the film series has collected over the years. We are excited to once again partner with Nick and UCP on this new Syfy series, and are incredibly proud to bring Chucky to television for the first time with the original creators.”

Mancini earlier teased that the series would be “darker than ever before. It’s going to be very creepy.” The series will also bring the franchise back to its original roots. It was explained that the series would extend what the movie franchise has set up:

“We deliberately ended Cult [of Chucky] with a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series. Because there are so many different threads now, television could best accommodate that so that was done intentionally. At the same time, we have a whole new world, a bunch of new characters which we can say nothing about.”

Mancini went on to say:

“I’ve long wanted to bring Chucky to television and Syfy is the perfect network for us. The show will be a fresh take on the franchise, allowing us to explore Chucky’s character with a depth that is uniquely afforded by the television series format, while staying true to the original vision that has terrorized audiences for over three decades now.”

Chucky released back in 1988 in the film Child’s Play, and there have been six sequels made.
