Black Superhero: Rocket

Paris Island, Dakota is one of the toughest places to grow up in. Raquel Ervin did just that. The city is flooded with gangs, murder, drugs, prostitution, extortion and any other crime you can think of. Raquel was a gymnast through her high school years and was popular. However, the thing she wanted most she kept to herself. Raquel wanted to be a writer but lacked motivation.

Raquel had been tricked into going to rob the home of Augustus Freeman IV during The Big Bang. They assumed the man was just a lawyer but he easily stopped them. Raquel would go back to see him time and time again until she learned that he was an alien stranded on the planet Earth who had been around for over 200 years, living through slavery and the civil rights movement. She convinced him that he should use his powers for good and become the hero Icon.

Using part of Icon's ship, Hardware created a belt for Rocket that would give her some powers as well as protect her and allow her to join Icon as a hero. During that time she took up the name Rocket. She also grew to be a close friend of Virgil Hawkins, better known as Static, with her being one of the only people to know his secret identity. Sadly, things didn't keep going great for Rocket.

Eventually she learned she was pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, Noble. Noble and Rocket's mother both insisted she have an abortion because neither wanted anything to do with helping raise the child. Despite that Rocket gave birth to the baby and kept it, naming him Amistad Augustus, after the slave ship that threw shackled people over board to lighten it's load, and of course Icon. This of course made Rocket the first and only teenage superhero with a child.

While away from the hero game Rocket still finds time to help her fellow hero Flashback. Flashback had become addicted to crack. Rocket stepped in and helped her detox and overcome the addiction. Eventually, Rocket returns to the hero world before Milestone closes it's doors. She hasn't been in any comic arcs since Milestone merged with DC but she was briefly in Young Justice.
