Is It Good?
Yes, Batman/Superman: World's Finest #9 is great. Great action, great storytelling, authentic character interactions, and a perfect cliffhanger to keep you wondering what's going to happen next. The only fault you could find with this comic is the "minor nitpick" variety, so you can set your anxious mind at ease.
The crux of Waid's script centers on the Boy Thunder's struggles with becoming a hero and learning when and how to use his powers. As you can imagine, a troubled youth still healing from a big trauma (the loss of his homeworld) leaves plenty of emotional angst to keep David off balance. Waid does an excellent job of exploring that imbalance through the action, and David's debriefs with Batman and Superman.
In the prior issue, we got the hint that there was more to David's story, and we got the lowdown in this issue. Is it a deep, dark, evil secret? No, but it is the kind of secret that could weigh heavily on an impressionable young person. Waid presents the secret in an authentic heart-to-heart between David and Superman, giving the issue a surprising amount of emotional weight and character development.
The last act of the issue shifts direction with a disaster orchestrated by the Key and Joker. Waid uses the disaster to showcase Superman's powers as well as through the trusting partnership between Batman and Superman. The Boy Thunder gets a masterclass education from the World's Finest as they teach David how to be a hero by example.
Waid's art is excellent, but as the title implies, Mora's art makes Waid and Mora the World's Finest team at DC. The details make the difference, and Mora's details are exquisite. From the way Robin's cape rests on his shoulders to the artistic arrangement of inset panels. Everything about Mora's art is a masterclass in creating a superhero comic.
