Super Powers has quickly become one of my go to books for smiles and fun. I like smiles and fun so that is a very good thing. It's a bonus that this is one of the rare "all-ages" books that is good for both young and old readers. Seeing who will pop up week in and week out is so much fun and newer readers get the bonus of a character roster plucked from every age of DC Comics. So, does this issue keep the fun train rolling? Let's find out...
The issue opens with Lois and Jimmy Olsen getting the story and some kick butt photos...of Brimstone! Yep, Darkseid's cyber-demon is in the house and going all Godzilla until Supergirl shows up to save the day. Actually, Brimstone just tosses Supergirl aside and Jimmy yells, "It's a Crisis!" Cue smiles and fun!
Meanwhile on New Krypton, Superman meets his baby brother, Prym-El. He's green, can fly and Superman is a bit perplexed. Back on Earth, we get the entrance of Martian Manhunter and him and Wonder Woman team up with Supergirl to fight Brimstone...to no avail.
Don't worry, there are still plenty of heroes left for Baltazar and Franco to grab and when they do, it was pretty cool. It's someone who may be getting more and more respect, but I always love seeing him being the hero of any story.
Back on New Krypton, we find out a bit of Jor-El's history before it comes back to kick him in the butt. The issue ends with Pryme-El naming himself something a little more awesome even as his dad is put away by some old frenemies. It all ends with a cliffhanger that shows who the big bads really are and it is crazy awesome!
This was a bit of a setup issue to get the second half of this six issue mini rolling and it does a fine job of it. Everything is lined up for an exciting second half of this series and I can't wait to read it.
The art in this book is so great. Art Baltazar gives everything a wonderful, cartoony look and if you are like me, you'll love it. Even if you aren't like me, you should love it. Seriously, seeing a cute Darkseid ready to take over the Universe never gets old!
Bits and Pieces:
Super Powers continues being my book for good, old fashioned fun. Baltazar and Franco's story and art will make you smile even as you learn about DC characters both old and new, well known and obscure. This is an all-ages book done right!
