*ResumeBuilder.com, the premier resource for professional resume templates and career advice, has published a recent survey report that explores how traditional gender roles and societal expectations may influence Americans’ perception of people who work from home. ResumeBuilder.com experts surveyed 1,195 adults in the United States.

According to survey results, 85 percent of Americans say working from home is appropriate for anyone, 13 percent say it is more appropriate for Women than men, and 2 percent say it is more appropriate for men than women.

When comparing a list of people with different familial and marital statuses, 76 percent say work from home is appropriate for ‘women with children at home,’ 66 percent say ‘men with children at home,’ 57 percent say ‘married women,’ 52 percent say ‘single women,’ 51 percent say ‘married men,’ and 50 percent say ‘single men.’ A minority of 8 percent say working from home is appropriate for ‘none of the above.’

Survey results show that 30 percent of Americans say that people who work from home are more family-focused than career-focused. Furthermore, 17 percent say that working from home equates to being less serious about careers. In fact, 17 percent of respondents believe that people who work from home should earn less money than if they work at an office.

“As we can see, the majority of Americans believe that working from home is suitable for anyone, regardless of sex or marital status,” says Stacie Haller, chief career advisor. “Although a minority currently hold views that are biased, we hope that society will continue to move further away from gender bias.”
