Cast of ‘Angry Black Girl and Her Monster’ Channel Frankenstein in This Slick Hood Tale | EUR Exclusive

*We spoke to Laya DeLeon Hayes, Chad L. Coleman and Denzel Whitaker about channeling Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein for the new horror title “The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster,” in theaters on June 9.

Writer/director Bomani J. Story draws from the classic Frankenstein tale to create a powerful narrative that centers on the Black experience. Per the synopsis: “The mad scientist is seen in a contemporary setting through a modern urban lens.  It’s raw, violent, thought-provoking…a metaphor for what’s really happening in today’s society. Bomani explores the terrors of systemic pressure in the African-American community as well as its resilience. The film is a fresh take on exploring these truths (realities), while using the horror genre to challenge audiences.”

“Growing up, I loved watching monster movies with my older sister,” said Story, Deadline reports. “We rarely, if ever, saw ones that tackled issues that were important to us, with people who looked like us.  It has been a dream of mine to bring an adaptation of Frankenstein to film through the black lens with a lead character as smart as my sister. Crypt has been a champion of this story since day one, but it finally clicked together when Laya came to play Vicaria. What an amazing team.”

The film, which premiered at this year’s SXSW, centers on Vicaria, “a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life,” per the synopsis.

Crypt TV’s Jack Davis and Darren Brandl co-produced “The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster” along with Story. Jeremy Elliott and Jasmine Johnson serve as executive produce for Crypt, Deadline reports.

“Bomani wrote a wildly original horror film that feels like everything we want to make at Crypt: noisy, scary, smart and with focus on characters, both monsters and humans.  With Story behind the camera, and Laya in front, we’re gonna launch a lasting theatrical franchise, this one is so special,” said Brandl.

In the clip below, the cast unpacks the “darkness” of their characters and what they’re hoping viewers take away from this captivating story.

“The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster” will be available on Demand and Digital on June 23rd.
