Def Pen Sports’ 2022 NFL Power Rankings: Week 2

2022 NFL Power Rankings: Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes ( Mitchell Leff – Getty Images )

Week one of the NFL got the 2022 season started and now the Def Pen team calculates the 2022 NFL Power Rankings for Week Two. This list was calculated by the averages of the three contributors and writers for this article. The contributors for Week one are Xavier Santos, David Loaiza, and Dylan Hargis.

2022 NFL Power Rankings: Week Two

1. Buffalo Bills 1-0 (-)

Not much to say other than Josh Allen is the truth and the team has some key players that will be returning from injury soon. Assuming they stay healthy, they should cruise to a division title and have it wrapped up before Thanksgiving.

2. Kansas City Cheifs 1-0 (+1)

Patrick Mahomes is a cheat code. The offense looked different but just as deadly. If this team can get defensive stops in key situations, they should be considered co-favorites to win the Lombardi alongside the Bills.

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 1-0 (+1)

There are a handful of teams that will give this Buccaneer’s team problems, the Cowboys are not one of those teams. The defense looks stout and Julio Jones looks like Julio Jones. I wouldn’t expect him to play 17 games but if he can hold it down until Chris Godwin is fully healthy, his signing will be manna from heaven for Tampa Bay.

4. Baltimore Ravens 1-0 (+5)

That game provided ammunition for those that love Lamar Jackson and those that believe he is overrated. The Ravens will make the playoffs. How far they go will depend on their ability to execute in the passing game.

5. Los Angeles Chargers 1-0 (+1)

The AFC West will be decided by the two games between the Chargers and Chiefs. This Chargers team is deep at every position and appears poised for a breakout season. They break into the top five of the 2022 NFL Power Rankings.

6. Los Angeles Rams 0-1 (-4)

The Rams are still here out of respect but we are concerned. They lack depth behind their blue chippers and the wrong injury or two could put this team in a bad predicament.

7. Miami Dolphins 1-0 (+7)

Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill are awesome. Tua, on the other hand, did little to dispel the notion that he will hold their offense back from reaching its full potential. The defense impressed but this season is all about Tua’s ability to stretch the field and force teams to respect his ability to throw the ball longer than 5 yards in the air.

8. Minnesota Vikings 1-0 (+9)

Are the Vikings good or are the Packers worse than we anticipated? The truth is somewhere in the middle. Justin Jefferson is making his case for best receiver in the league but we’re still on the fence about the team as a whole.

9. Cincinnati Bengals 0-1 (-4)

The idea that the Bengals fixed their O-line may have been premature. Joe Burrow was running for his life and it affected his ability to set his feet and deliver accurate throws down the field. They should be able to beat most teams in the regular seasons but teams with legitimate defensive fronts will give this team nightmares.

10. New Orleans Saints 1-0 (+10)

Michael Thomas looked good in his return from injury but the offense didn’t look cohesive. They have the talent to compete but there will be a learning curve with a new head coach at the helm.

11. Philadelphia Eagles 1-0 (+8)

Maybe the biggest winner of the weekend giving everything that happened. The team demonstrated their offensive firepower between Hurts and AJ Brown, who
had 155 receiving yards in his debut with the team and an established run game
that comes from last season.

12. Denver Broncos 0-1 (-5)

There was an offensive spark with the 67-yard touchdown from Jerry Jeudy but clock
management and decision-making from Nathaniel Hackett cost them the game.
These problems should improve with time as Hackett gains experience as a head
coach, but with title aspirations, they need to come fast.

13. Green Bay Packers 0-1 (-5)

Davante Adams’ absence was more than felt during the Packers’ first game. Rookie
Christian Watson had an unbelievable run in a deep route and Rodgers managed to
get him the ball but it slipped from Watson’s hands. With two rookie receivers in big
roles, it will take time for the connection to be ready. With this team, we have to put
our trust in the back-to-back MVP winner to get some wins for the Packers. They fall on the 2022 NFL Power Rankings for now.

14. Las Vegas Raiders 0-1 (-4)

The team will need to protect Derek Carr better, as he was sacked five
times in the game and, also, lost the ball several times (three interceptions and two fumbles). They have a chance to redeem themselves against the Cardinals on Sunday and get
back on track.

15. San Francisco 49ers 0-1 (-4)

Elijah Mitchell is injured, they lost to the Bears with Justin Fields completing eight
passes and committed 12 penalties for 99 yards. Trey Lance showed flashes of the
future for the 49ers’ offense and the rainy conditions weren’t easy to handle but
certainly losing against the Bears wasn’t the start they wanted.

16. Pittsburgh Steelers 1-0 (+7)

Once again, the Steelers’ defense shows up and proves why they are one of the
top units in the league. Four interceptions from Joe Burrow, one defensive touchdown, and
a blocked extra point led the team to an overtime win against the Bengals. The one
concern is that all of that happened and still, the team struggles to secure the win. The 2022 NFL Power Rankings have their eyes on the Steelers.

17. Indianapolis Colts 0-0-1 (-1)

They were called to win the division against a weakened version of the Titans. In the
end, they tied against the Houston Texans and they came back from down 17 points
in the fourth quarter. Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman had over 100 yards
each so it’s more about finishing their drives with a touchdown.

18. Tennessee Titans 0-1 (-3)

Another AFC South team that didn’t win this week and also against a team
ranked lower than them. The Titans lost to the Giants and a lot of questions we had
about them were answered. Ryan Tannehill doesn’t have a number one receiver to throw
to and Derrick Henry is still getting himself back on track after a foot injury.

19. Cleveland Browns 1-0 (+2)

Jacoby Brissett did a good job managing the team well enough to secure the win
against the Panthers. Defensively they got four sacks on Mayfield and one
interception. Nick Chubb ran for 141 yards and rookie kicker Cade York nailed a 64-yard
a field goal to win the game.

20. Arizona Cardinals 0-1 (-8)

The Cardinals were completely smashed by the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. In
our rankings, they are the team that went down the most positions after the
Cowboys. They need to prove themselves in the second week against the Raiders or risk dropping more in the 2022 NFL Power Rankings.

21. New York Giants 1-0 (+3)

We did not expect to be talking about the Giants winning this week, but here we are. If Saquon Barkley looks like that every week we might just talk about it more often this season compared to last season.

22. Washington Commanders 1-0 (+3)

Carson Wentz was his usual high target gun slinger self in week one and the team did beat the Jaguars. Do we trust this team to win games? No, we don’t but for now, they can celebrate the win.

23. New England Patriots 0-1 (-5)

It was only one game, but the speculation that Mac Jones is not a franchise quarterback will only get louder after a game like that. The lack of an offense could have something to do with whatever weird idea they have going on there. It seems that everything special about Bill Belichick is in Tampa Bay.

24. Chicago Bears 1-0 (+6)

In some of the worst field conditions we’ve seen in the modern era of the NFL, the Bears came out with a shocking win over the San Francisco 49ers. That only means they get to climb up the 2022 NFL Power Rankings.

25. Seattle Seahawks 1-0 (+7)

We did not expect to see much of a fight out of the Seattle Seahawks this season, but it seems playing against Russell Wilson was the motivation the team needed to start the season. Geno Smith looked amazing under center and perhaps this team won’t occupy the bottom again this year.

26. Houston Texans 0-0-1 (+2)

The AFC South did not win a game on Sunday despite two teams playing each other. Houston managed to blow a lead and tie against the Colts. A tie is still better than a loss in the standings! Davis Mills could actually be working with some potential.

27. Carolina Panthers 0-1 (-5)

Cade York broke the heart of Baker Mayfield and the Panthers fanbase on Sunday. Outside of that the offense just looks awful. We get that protecting Christian McCaffrey is important, but he has to touch the ball more often.

28. Dallas Cowboys 0-1 (-15)

Things look bleak for the Dallas Cowboys. The offensive line is in shambles and couldn’t protect Dak Prescott at all. Now he is hurt for at least four weeks and Cooper Rush will start under center. Yikes!

29. Atlanta Falcons 0-1 (-3)

*insert joke about the Falcons blowing leads* Seriously though this team is rebuilding and will benefit in the long run from losing these games. They slide in the 2022 NFL Power Rankings.

30. Detroit Lions 0-1 (-3)

People want to believe in this team and its heart, but they just aren’t ready to win big games at this time. Changing the culture is important and that is being done this season.

31. Jacksonville Jaguars 0-1 (-1)

Would moving the team to London motivate the Khan family into caring more about the team? We’d like to find out! Go London Jaguars! (Maybe a better name would help)

32. New York Jets 0-1 (-3)

We learned the answer to the question, Is Joe Flacco still a starting quarterback in the NFL? No, no he is not.

*The biggest movers of the week were the New Orleans Saints (+10) and the Dallas Cowboys (-15)*
