“Elder. Scam.” is the second straight Episode of Black-ish to deal with the issue of brain health. While last weeks episode dealt with Rainbow’s postpartum depression, “Elder. Scam.” gets into Dementia. On this episode, it’s about Dre’s concern over his mom’s cognitive functions.
Dre learns that Ruby might be losing a step when he finds out that she sent money to scammers who claimed to have kidnapped Junior. Straightaway Dre is concerned because Ruby never gets scammed, and is usually the one doing the scamming. Dre would grow up watching his mom set up all kinds of schemes, but seeing her getting a taste of her own medicine leads him to think of dementia.
Like last week Ruby, was slow to believe that Rainbow was dealing with postpartum depression, so, she’s unbending when Dre brings this up to her. Instead, she goes to her scamming ways and gets a new car from Dre. But Ruby shows more signs of her cognitive decline when she drives the car into the garage door. After some time, Ruby admits that she wouldn’t have fallen for those scammers in her younger days.
Overall, the episode felt a bit awkward. Last week on “Mother Nature”, Bow tells Ruby to get out of her house. A week later, Ruby is back and the vibe in the house seems like nothing really happened between Ruby and Bow.
That said, the show continues to build towards Yara Shahidi’s “Grown-ish”. Trevor Jackson returns as Aaron, the student Zoey met during her freshman orientation. Zoey doesn’t see Aaron as a love interest but Diane does. Incorporating Aaron into the Black-ish storyline brought out the best laughs throughout the episode. My only question is when are we getting a Jack( Diane’s twin brother) and Diane spinoff?
