Tusshar Kapoor is in a happy space with his last Film, Golmaal Again, doing exceptionally well at the box office. Next week, the actor celebrates his birthday and hence it is a double celebration of sorts. We caught up with Tusshar and spoke to him about his birthday plans, the success of Golmaal Again and more. Excerpts from the interview:
How do you plan to celebrate the success of Golmaal Again?
I am really happy. Celebrations are being planned. No formal party yet but we shall do something soon. We have been promoting after the release too! I have been going out with friends, I am busy and celebrating it. Giving interviews, shooting for magazine covers is my way of celebrating the success of Golmaal Again.
Golmaal Again has clocked more than Rs 200 crore at the box office. How does it feel?
Numbers always matter. Those who tell you that they don’t matter are lying through their teeth. The numbers don’t have to be Rs 100 crore always. For a small film it can be Rs 30 crore and for a medium film it can be Rs 70 crore. But everyone has a target average. And more than numbers, it is the footfalls. And we are excited that Golmaal Again has garnered such huge numbers. (Also read: What was Laksshya’s reaction on watching daddy Tusshar Kapoor in Golmaal Again? Find out!)
Despite Golmaal Again making so much money, there is a certain section of the critics that feel this genre of films is ‘mindless.’ Your take?
I think a small section of critics have an issue with this genre. Not all have an issue. They don’t like commercial masala comedy even if you add a story. Golmaal Again had a story. But they are not the audience for this film. They know this is not the film for them to judge. I am sure Lipstick Under My Burkha – the critics that you are talking about -their reviews would matter in this film. In a film like Golmaal Again, they don’t relate to this genre. Even if you show them Charlie Chaplin, they will praise him because he is a legend, but they won’t like the comedy in it. I don’t understand the bias and it is kind of sad. But the wave for Golmaal Again was very strong since the Friday and the audience overpowered any negative opinion that was there. I haven’t seen any negative reviews. In fact, I think most reviews have been positive. Golmaal 1, 3 and Golmaal Again got positive reviews. Only Golmaal 2 was panned.
Given the collections that Golmaal Again has clocked in, do you think that a critic’s review doesn’t matter and eventually it is the audience that decides the fate of a film?
Once Friday and Saturday goes, the critics verdict doesn’t matter. From Monday onwards, it is what the audience feels. The collections went to a new level everyday. Fastest Rs 100 crore, first blockbuster of the year, first 200 crore of the year etc. So the response was unprecedented. This time, everyone – from my son’s playschool teachers to my school teachers to my mom’s friends – all of them were praising the film. The movie has gone beyond regular comedy. That has been heartening. The movie has been a hit with all the sections of the audience.
Has Laksshya seen the film? What was his reaction?
No I haven’t shown him the movie. I can show him any Golmaal film but he won’t understand which one has released right now. But obviously I showed him the posters and banners on the road and he recognizes me in it. He points out at my face and says ‘Papa.’
What was your family’s reaction to the movie?
My mom doesn’t really like comedies. She is more of a family drama person. But she also liked it. She has been taken in with the reactions that she is getting. That feels good. I have had a couple of blockbusters in my life, but the feeling that came with Golmaal Again is amazing. The whole Diwali vibe added on to it. When will Golmaal 5 happen?
I have no idea. I am sure Rohit Shetty definitely has it in mind but I don’t know if he has decided when will the script be in place. He will definitely make it but the details – he knows best. But I don’t think he is ready to confirm anything right now. What we are sure of is that Rohit will not take another 7 years. That is too long a time.
You celebrate your birthday on November 20. Plans?
I am actually thinking as we speak also as to what to do. I am too lazy to have a party but I think it is the right time to do it this year because of Golmaal Again. It will be silly if I don’t have anything. I am still deciding. Let’s see if it works out. Regularly, I have close friends over for a sundowner. May be this year, I will do something more. How big a party, I have to take a call.
Any special plan for your birthday with Laksshya?
With Laksshya, I have special plans everyday. He is too young to understand that it is a birthday. I will be spending my whole day with him. He sleeps early so he cannot party with me.
Next month Kareena Kapoor Khan’s son Taimur Ali Khan turns one and he is your son Laksshya’s friend. Anything special that you plan to gift Taimur?
No clue! I haven’t caught up with friends so I don’t know what Bebo has planned for Taimur. It is really far yet. There is full one month to go. Abhi nahi socha kuch…ek mahine baad, we will see.
