Thalapathy Vijay‘s Mersal has taken an outstanding opening at the domestic box office. After recording a fantastic opening occupancy in 2000 screens across India, the film raked in a massive amount of Rs 31.50 crore on day one. With that it not only beat Rajinikanth’s Kabali at the Chennai box office, but also Thala Ajith‘s Vivegam at the domestic box office. If you remember, Vivegam had raked in Rs 25.83 crore at the domestic box office on day one. This was one of the highest opening day collections for a South Indian film. But looks like Mersal has managed to beat it comfortably, by raking in Rs 31.50 crore. However, Mersal could not beat the first day collections of Prabhas’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion and Rajinikanth’s Kabali at the pan India box office.
However, you cannot discount Mersal‘s achievement. It is a fantastic feat by Vijay and Samantha’s film to rake in Rs 31.50 crore on the Diwali Day (Laxmi Pujan day), during which most of the people are generally busy with the festivities. With a fantastic buzz, great reviews and a phenomenal word of mouth publicity, we expect it to continue raking in the moolah. Especially, the day after Diwali which is today (October 20), is huge for any film. And today being a holiday, we expect Mersal to see a fantastic growth on day 2. You might just see the film collect another insane figure. But that won’t be the end of things! With an extended weekend, we are sure the movie will continue raking in the moolah and collect in excess of Rs 120 crore in the first weekend.
