When Baahubali: The Beginning released in 2015, it became a national phenomenon due to its cliffhanger climax that led to the emergence of the most asked question, “Why Kattappa Killed Baahubali?” This was the most talked about thing before the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. While we finally got the answer to the most asked question, I couldn’t help but notice the real reason behind it. If you haven’t watched Baahubali 2: The Conclusion yet then you might not want to read further. SPOILERS AHEAD.
According to my analysis it was not Kattappa but Devasena who killed Baahubali. Confused? Let me explain. In the film, Bhallaladeva makes Sivagami believe that Baahubali wants to kill him. As a result of which she gets conned by Bhallaladeva and Bijjala Deva into ordering Kattappa to kill Baahubali. We all know how that turns out. But if you look closely it was not Sivagami, Bhallaladeva or Kattappa who were responsible for Baahubali’s death, but his own wife, the feisty and fiery, Devasena. Devasena was a no nonsense queen of the Kuntala kingdom. So when she witnesses Sivagami being unfair she doesn’t hold back in giving her a piece of her mind. So much so, that quite a few times she calls her unfair, dim-wit and what not. That too in front of all the ministers and their subjects. And it was Baahubali who was at the receiving end of it, each time. First time, after Devasena’s outburst, he had to lose his kingdom. Second time, she spoils the baby shower party by making Sivagami stage a walkout. Third time, Baahubali was expelled from the palace to lead the life of a farmer. And if all that was not enough, her brother figure, Kumar Varma, sort of scripts his death. Also read: Dummy’s guide to recreating the success formula of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali
Now many might say that it is how she was by nature. True, she was fair and couldn’t stand injustice but a good leader is the one who knows what to speak and when to do so. If you remember, when, for the first time she had insulted Sivagami, she was in awe of her for her fieriness. So she could’ve easily lured her into making Baahubali the king using tactics but she took Sivagami’s fondness of her fiery attitude in the wrong manner and ended up insulting her quite a few times more. And poor Baahubali had to succumb to the promise he had made to his wife, that is of protecting her. So much so that, every time she insulted Sivagami and the kingdom of Mahishmati, Baahubali had to bear the brunt. Which finally led to his demise. So Devasena, it was you who killed Baahubali, not Kattappa, Sivagami or even Bhallaladeva. No wonder Bhallaladeva lived a long glorious life.
