Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is perhaps his most adapted work till date, as many film-makers all over the world have adapted the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers in various forms and styles. In Bollywood itself, the tale has been adapted into various movies like Ek Duje Ke Liye, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Ishaqzaade and others. Now Ekta Kapoor, television’s Czarina, is drawing inspiration from the tale for her first web series, Romil and Jugal for app Alt Balaji, that goes online from April 16. But there is a twist – in the series, the lovers are men.
Yes, both Romil and Jugal are gay lovers, who have to not only fight their family opposition, but also the society’s orthodox approach to their relationships. But there is more to the series, going by the trailer. It’s not exactly serious, as we do have fun and humorous moments. And a Game of Thrones reference too. The trailer introduces us to Jugal, a closeted homosexual, whose sexual orientation is known to people close to him, and Romil, who enjoys the affections of many girls, including Jugal’s sister. However, Romil feels a lot more comfortable with Jugal, leading to sensitive, romantic bond between these two. Romil and Jugal is certainly a bold concept, and doesn’t flinch for showing what Censors term as objectionable content, like the kissing scene between the leads. It also boasts of some fine actors like Mandira Bedi, Suchitra Pillai and Manini Mishra, while Rajeev Siddhartha as Romil and Manraj as Jugal are fine in their roles. And to make its inspiration clear, there is also a scene from a college play that is about Romeo and Juliet.
Watch the trailer…
Romil and Jugal is directed by Nupur Asthana who earlier directed two movies Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge and Bewakoofiyaan. Romil and Jugal was supposed to be a movie, but Ekta Kapoor knew that the content wouldn’t find favour with the Censor Board, and wisely chose to make it as a web series.
