Legendary Filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya‘s much-awaited spiritual-romantic drama Piyaa Albela premiered on Zee TV today. Produced under the banner of Rajashri Productions, the show’s promos had already aroused a certain kind of intrigue around the show. More so because of its never-heard-before kind of concept and fresh pairing. I watched the first episode and here’s what I thought about it –
What is it about
Starring popular Marathi actor Akshay Mhatre and newcomer Sheen Dass, Piyaa Albela is a modern retelling of Vishwamitra and Menaka’s love story. The show revolves around Naren (played byAkshay Mhatre), who’s a recluse. He’s born to an affluent family, who expects him to take their business forward. But, Naren is far away from all these materialistic pleasures of life. He wants to indulge in nature, philosophy, art, spirituality and seek answers to his life. Aggrieved by Naren’s ignorance, his parents decide to take help from a girl named Pooja (Sheen Dass). She is a modern-day girl who is ambitious and knows exactly what she wants from her life. She is approached by his parents not to seduce their son but to rouse him from his spiritual slumber. How the two react to each other and then gradually come closer in the course of their interactions forms the crux of Piyaa Albela.
What is hot
The show brings to viewers a perfect mix of romance, drama and spirituality. This is perhaps the first time when a love story of this kind has been explored on Indian television. In a time when VFX-laden super-natural shows are on an ascent, Piyaa Albela seems like a whiff of fresh air. Apart from its unique concept, the show also boasts of some good performances. Kashmiri beauty Sheen Dass has the vivacity and elegance that her character Pooja needs to embody. Akshay Mhatre, too, is impressive as Naren. Although we could just get a glimpse of him in the first episode, we can tell that he has the looks and the skills required to take this forward.
Considering Sooraj Barjatya has been working on the show for the past eight years, the screenplay could have been more crisp. The show is set in Dehradun but the beauty of the place doesn’t seem to have been tapped to its fullest extent. Although, Sheen and Akshay fit their roles perfectly, it remains to be seen whether people will like them as a couple.
The fresh pairing and the hatke story makes this spiritual romantic drama a delightful watch.
