Welcome to the super exciting first #DesignInsights interview of the new year. Each year they just seem to get more and inspiring, with 2016 an especially fabulous year and a tough act to follow! As such, we needed to find someone super-stylish to really get us off to flyer. So without further ado, let’s launch into interior inspiration and welcome the ultra-stylish Patricia from No Glitter No Glory. Her eye-catching blog features the coolest features in deco design, home renovation and design inspiration. Let’s getting chatting…
Describe your design style in 5 words or less.
Quality, midcentury, colourful and a bit schizophrenic!
With the Pantone Colour Institute announcing ‘greenery’ as its ‘Colour of the Year 2017’, what tips can you give us to add a splash of green into your home?
I absolutely love Green, both the colour and plants. It’s such a versatile hue with a lot of character that works well with warm and cooler colours. I’ve painted my hallway emerald green myself and I love it, but if it is too bold of a statement for you, just start with accessories like pillow cases or a vase, and of course plants!
People often say ‘green’ reconnects them with nature and has soothing qualities, what’s your take on this?
It’s one of my favourite colours, and I definitely agree. I grew up in the countryside with a big garden but now I live in the city, and green really helps me create a bit of an oasis in my home.
Our newIcon range of Pedal Bins (p.s. that help clean up the ocean, read more here) includes some fab new colours, do you like your homewares to blend in, or take centre stage?
I like them to be sleek and in sync with the decor. For my current kitchen and bathroom, that means black!
We love our planet as much as you do. That’s why we’ve really stepped up our green game to help rid the world’s oceans of plastic, thanks to our newIcon Pedal Bins. Are you more inspired to buy a product if you know it’s helping a good cause?
Funnily enough, I’ve asked (and received) two of the newIcons bins in matte black for Christmas. The fact that it’s helping a good cause never hurts! I think it’s become so easy for us to consume and not think about the consequences. Most of the time, we are just too greedy, want too much, consume too fast (I’m guilty of this too) and I’m really thankful when brands step up their game, take responsibility and help raise awareness. Every little bit helps.
Any top tips on how to reuse or upcycle products to give them a new lease of life?
My favourite way to upcycle is a new coat of paint. Paint can change everything! I’ve painted everything from a leather pouffe to bathroom tiles to most recently my fridge. I’d been hating our ugly fridge for a while now but didn’t want to be wasteful and replace an appliance solely based on looks. My best advice is to read a lot about the subject online and then just go for it! You can paint just about anything, and the idea is a lot scarier than actually doing it, believe me!
What inspires you today?
I’m so inspired by Pinterest every day, it’s my happy place! My favourite blogger is Sarah Sherman Samuel, I think everything she does is so stylish and I love her photography. I love the work of Dimore Studio, India Mahdavi and my own boyfriend Dieter Vander Velpen. I’m always inspired when I travel too, the best way to recharge my batteries!
New year goals for 2017 you’d like to share? (i.e. interesting projects/environmental goals)
My 2017 goals: Take better care of myself, eat less meat and keep working on projects I love!
Thanks Patricia! Don’t forget to give No Glitter No Glory a like on Facebook and a follow on Instagram & Pinterest for more inspirations!
