Short History of Multan

The city Multan district of province Punjab of Pakistan is an ancient city. The correct age of Multan has not determined yet but it is one of the most ancient cities in South Asia. The city Multan Is as much old that Alexander the Great attacked on the Multan in 323 BC. It is said that while fighting for Multan Alexander hit by a poisoned arrow which became the cause of his death. In the mid of 5thcentury Toramana attacked on the city with a group of nomads. He got succeeded in taking over the city but didn’t stay to rule. In 641 a Chinese traveler name Huen Tsang visited Multan.

In 7thcentury first time Muslim armies attacked on multan in the command of Al Mhuallab ibn Abi Suffrah. But he couldn’t succeeded in merging multan in their empire. Couple of Muslim leaders attacked multan this year but no one could achieve the target. However, after a few decades, Muhammad Bin Qasim came to take sindh and along with sind he also took multan. There were 6000 temple from those Muslims found a lot gold. Qarmatians ruled over Multan from the mid of 10thcentury. Qaramatian were expelled from Egypt and Iraq thus they reach to Multan. Qarmatians ruled over multan from 10thcentury to 1175 at last they were expelled by Sultan Muhammad Ghori.


Mughals came into control over multan and vice versa in 1524 and their empire remained till 1739. Multan enjoyed peace over 200 years under Mughal’s Empire. Then it was ruled by Nawab Ali as he was selected the governor of Multan, Nawab Ali Mohammad Khan Khakwani built famous Mosque of Multan Ali Muhammad khan Mosque in 1757. In 1758 Maratha Empire controlled over Multan and Abdal Ali Durani conquer the Multan in 1759. Then after Sikh era in 1848 Multan was under the British command after defeating Mulraj Singh who killed two British Raj Selected governors. After end of British Raj Multan became the part of Islamic State Of Pakistan in 1947.
