Women

So my wife and I were watching TV news the other evening. The anchor made a comment about this being the ERA OF WOMEN. It most definitely is!

If you’re near as ancient as I (born in 1947), you will no doubt remember how women were treated during the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s): kept in low paying jobs (what few there were for women), constantly subject to public leers and lewd remarks from men. Television and movie roles displayed women as silly, ignorant, incapable of anything other than the roles of mothers and housekeepers and domestic servants -- wives to domineering men.

During my youth men wrote most all the Science Fiction. The ONLY woman successful in the field at that time was Andre Norton who wrote what were known as “JUVENILES” targeted at the teenage market.

Then my generation caused a great cultural revolution in the late 1960’s, early 1970’s. It was then that the fate of women improved. I’ve often thought that birth control pills were greatly responsible, freeing many women from undesired pregnancy.

President LBJ spawned the cultural revolution by pursuing the illegal Vietnam War, murdering many tens of thousands of those in the service (murder is defined as an illegal killing, only congress can declare war!!!!). Plus Nixon’s Watergate scandal and the following threat of impeachment led to his resigning as president. The youth of that time perceived the need to take another path if we were to survive as a reasonably unified democracy.  Actually we’re a republic but that’s another issue. I suspect the Internet will turn us into a true democracy. I’ll throw in my take on that subject in another post!!!!!

It’s taken an entire generation for women to arrive at this point. Now women work in politics (I’ve been predicting Condoleeza Rice as our first female president), news reporting and anchoring, sports (tennis, golf, surfing, auto racing etc.), starring roles in movies and TV, serving in the military, especially as jet pilots, space exploration as astronauts, cosmonauts. mission socialists, becoming doctors, leading public demonstrations against fascism.

Speaking of doctors, I’ve had multiple women doctors. They are highly competent but don’t have the arrogant attitudes that male doctors display. Ever notice how older male doctors often have male pattern baldness? That’s caused by too much testosterone.

My  wife calls the shots in our household, I’ve observed the same in many other families of mine and following generations.

Maybe someday we will become a modernized version of classic Greek culture where women ran everything while the men fought the wars, philosophized, created and worked in the arts.

We can only hope.
