Heikala's Japanese inspired illustrations created with blended inks and watercolours

Stumbling across Heikala's beautiful work on Instagram, I had to discover more about her style and technique. She apparently blends inks and watercolours to create her detailed illustrations, often with a Japanese theme and a lead female character with bobbed hair. If you look closely enough, you'll also spot a cat in some of her artworks.

Born in Finland, Heikala graduated in Graphic Design at the Lahti Institute of Design two years ago and is now a full-time illustrator. Describing her work as "cute", she's a natural at telling stories through her illustrations and has even printed two of her own artbooks so far, both of which are available to buy via her online shop. Prints, enamel pins, bags and original artworks are also up for grabs if you're a fan of her distinctive style.

"A huge source of inspiration for my work comes from Japanese animation and other popular culture. I've also now been to Japan three times and will visit again this autumn. I like to take pictures and get inspired and then implement my adventures in my work. I think my style is a combination of Japanese anime-style and Finnish children's book illustrations...think Rudolf Koivu and Tove Jansson."
