Saatchi Gallery and Huawei have joined forces to offer artists, photographers, and enthusiasts around the globe a chance to show their most creative selfies internationally, and have their work exhibited at The Saatchi Gallery as part of the #SaatchiSelfie competition.
The opportunity is open to anyone who submits up to six selfies online, and has already received over 8,000 selfies from 100 different countries. Tracey Emin, Idris Khan, Juergen Teller, Juno Calypso and Saatchi Gallery CEO Nigel Hurst are set to be the judges for the contest, and they'll choose a shortlist of 10 with an overall winner to be announced at the launch of From Selfie to Self-Expression, an accompanying exhibition which will run from 31 March until 30 May 2017.
From Selfie to Self-Expression will showcase key artworks, many of which feature interactive, digital and user-generated content, by artists as diverse as Christopher Baker, Juno Calypso, Tracey Emin, Van Gogh, Mohau Modisakeng, Rembrandt, Cindy Sherman, Rafael Lozano-Hemmerand Velazquez. Showing alongside examples of many influential artists’ work will be selfies that have quickly become icons of the digital era – from the beautiful and sublime to the mad, bad and downright dangerous.
If you want to join this stellar lineup, then the #SaatchiSelfie competition closes Sunday 12 March and the winner will be announced at the Saatchi Gallery on 30 March 2017. To enter, visit www.saatchigallery.com/selfie. In the meantime, here are some highlights of entries so far.
