In the putrid mud of the river Thames
the Mud Larks searched for any treasure
up to their waists they each scrabbled
looking for things that could be recovered
women and children spent their existence
trying to make a living just to survive
in the eighteenth of old London town
they wallowed in mud face down!
Toiling every day to find any kind of items
just so they could make a basic living
in all weathers there they clambered
through slime and riverside deep mud
finding trinkets and gold from deep below
the mud Larks were part of London’s history
exhausted and starving they had to seek
even though undernourished and weak!
They are remembered at the Thames low tide
the mud larks together side by side!
